BACKGROUND My wish is to make a difference in the lives of sick kids and their families, especially those hospitalised for long periods of time. By 1996 I had visited over 45 Hospitals. I watched too many patients and their families ‘live’ in four walls, artificial light and air-conditioning for days, weeks, months and sometimes even years. One day, I realised that living like this didn’t make sense anymore. I thought building eight gardens in hospitals was enough. It’s not enough. Patients in every hospital need a garden sanctuary and a program to ensure they can safely get from their bed to the garden and back again. What a difference this would make to all children, adults and the elderly confined to their beds right now.
